Vernon Nelson has been Archivist of the Moravian Church in America, Northern Province, for forty years. In those years, he has assisted countless students of Moravian studies as they worked on innumerable topics. On the occasion of his seventieth birthday, sixteen of those scholars have collaborated on this collection of essays in his honor which show Vernon's influence on the authors' careers as well as scholarship in general. The book is presented as a Festschrift, in German literally a "celebration writing," a German custom which honors a retiring scholar.
For readers unfamiliar with the Moravian Church and its many contributions to culture and history, as well as those who are, this volume discusses a wide variety of topics, including music and worship, Indian missions, travel and communications, economic practice and theology. Many of the essays are based on primary documents which have been in Vernon's care. This volume is a fitting tribute to over four decades of service and ministry.
Included are works by some of the top Moravian scholars today, including: Craig D. Atwood, Alice M. Caldwell, C. Daniel Crews, Otto Dreydoppel, Jr. Katherine Carte Engel, Katherine M. Faull, Arthur Freeman, Dieter Gembicki, Nola Reed Knouse, Dietrich Meyer, James Nelson, Paul Peucker, Beverly P. Smaby, Mark A. Turdo, Peter Vogt, Carola Wessel
