The Moravian Historical Society, in preparing for the Christmas season, is organizing a Community Putzmakers group which will meet at 2 p.m. Sunday at the Whitefield House, 214 E. Center St., Nazareth.
The society is seeking adults and young people who would like to help set up a putz at the Whitefield House. They need not be Moravian, nor have previous experience in putz building.
A Moravian putz is a miniature scene of the birth of Christ. Most putzes are more elaborate, however, including individual scenes of angels, shepherds and sheep, the Wise Men and Prophets. Also included are lights illuminating scenes and a live or recorded narration of the Christmas story, with music.
The Community Putzmakers, under the leadership of the Rev. John Morman, will set up the putz on the first floor of the Whitefield House Museum. It will be on display through the Christmas season and will be part of an exhibit on the putz being organized by the society. Many of the figures in the putz and exhibit were made or collected by the late Jennie C. Trein, whose putzes were a Nazareth Christmas tradition for over 50 years.
There is no cost involved in joining the Community Putzmakers. For more information, and to sign up, call the society office at 759- 5070.
