Dr. Murray L. Wagner of Oak Brook, Ill., will speak at the 127th annual vesper of the Moravian Historical Society at 12:30 p.m. Thursday in Nazareth Moravian Church.
Dr. Wagner, librarian and professor of historical research at Bethany Theological Seminary in Oak Brook, is the author of "Peter Chelcicky: A Radical Separatist in Hussite Bohemia."
A farmer by vocation, Peter of Chelcic has been called one of the greatest Bohemian writers in the 15th Century. He was known for his plain talk and opposition to war.
Dr. Wagner, associate pastor of the First Church of the Brethren in Harrisburg, 1966-67, worked with Brethren Service in Poland in the early 1960s and studied at both the Free University in Berlin, Germany, and the Comenius Theological Faculty in Prague, Czechoslovakia.
His presentation will be the second by the Moravian Historical Society this fall in the area of early Moravian history. The denomination was officially organized in 1457, following the martyrdom of John Hus. Much of the church's history from 1720 on is well known, but recent scholarship, especially since Vatican Council II, has brought to light much of importance to modern Moravians and all Christians.
Dr. Edwin A. Sawyer, president, will be in charge of the society's annual business meeting, to begin at 10:30 a.m. Thursday in the Whitefield House. New members will be elected to the society and Volume 23, Nos. 3 and 4, of the society's "Transactions" will be on display and available for distribution. The book contains five lectures on subjects of Moravian history.
The Nazareth Moravian Trombone Choir, directed by William S. Kleintop, will play and the church's diener corps, led by Mr. and Mrs. Warren Gulick, will serve the meal.
