Morning Call - Allentown, Pa. Author: The Morning Call

Memories of the former Nazareth Hall Military Academy will be shared in a free public program at 3 p.m. March 4 in the Whitefield House, 214 E. Center St., Nazareth.

The "Memories of Nazareth Hall" program is sponsored by the Moravian Historical Society.

A movie on Nazareth Hall activities, made in the 1920s shortly before the school closed, will be shown. A discussion by some of the school's 13 surviving alumni and Nazareth residents who remember the school in operation is also planned.

Executive Director Susan M. Dreydoppel said this will be the final opportunity to view the exhibit "Nazareth Hall Academy, 1759-1929" at the Whitefield House.

The program is the first in a yearlong series planned as part of Nazareth's 250th anniversary observance.

Nazareth Hall was a boys school operated by the Moravians in the large building originally intended to be the Manor House for the Barony of Nazareth. The school was moved to the building in 1759. Several years later, it became a boarding school, attended by students from a wide geographical area.

During the Civil War, teachers introduced military exercises into the curriculum, and the school evolved into a military academy. The school closed in July 1929. The building on W. Center Street has been converted into apartments.
