Morning Call - Allentown, Pa. Author: The Morning Call

An exhibit of works by noted Bethlehem artist Fred Bees will open Sunday at the Whitefield House in Nazareth with a reception 2 to 5 p.m. Admission is free to the museum and exhibit.

"WaterWorks: Fred Bees' Watercolors of Moravian Bethlehem" highlights the lifelong career of the artist from his first sketch as a teen-ager in 1935 to a work completed in 1998. More than 50 paintings and drawings are included in the exhibit, including several early pencil sketches, oil paintings and pen and ink drawings in addition to the watercolors for which he is best known.

Organized by the Moravian Historical Society, the exhibit focuses on his paintings of buildings in the historic area of Bethlehem, including Central Moravian Church, the Old Chapel, the Gemein Haus and other buildings along Church Street and in the 18th Century Industrial Quarter.

Displays of books, pamphlets, Christmas greeting cards, note cards and other items that have used Bees drawings are included in the exhibit.

Bees will give several gallery talks, telling some of the stories behind the paintings, at 3 p.m. Feb. 24; 10 a.m. March 19; and 2 p.m. April 11.

Bees' works have been published in books and brochures and they have been used on three Bethlehem Christmas Seals. He is a charter member of the Bethlehem Palette Club and Liberty High School has named him to their Alumni of Distinction list. In 1997, he was named "Bethlehem's Artist of the Year" by the city's Fine Arts Commission.

"Water Works" will be shown at the Whitefield House through April 11. The Whitefield House is at 214 E. Center St. (Route 191), Nazareth, and is open 1 to 4 p.m. daily and by appointment for group tours. For more information about the exhibit or the gallery talks, call 759-5070.
