MORAVIAN HISTORIANS TO HOLD 129TH VESPER MEETING OCT. 9

Morning Call - Allentown, Pa. Author: The Morning Call

The Moravian Historical Society will hold its 129th annual vesper meeting at noon Oct. 9 in the Nazareth Moravian Church, preceded by the annual business meeting at 10 a.m. in the Whitefield House.

Highlight of this year's vesper meeting will be a paper on "The Moravians and the Waldensians" to be presented by the Rt. Rev. Dr. Edwin A. Sawyer of Bethlehem. Bishop Sawyer has researched the origin of the office of bishop in the Moravian Church.

In connection with the meeting, the society will distribute the first copies of the newly published volume of a paper originally presented to the society a few years ago by Dr.Winfred A. Kohls of the Moravian College History Department.

The updated publication includes 15 pages of color photographs, the first time the society has gone into color for publications of its transactions. It includes a copy of the original charter issued by Catherine the Great to the Moravian Church in the mid 18th century to permit the start of activities in Russia.

Kohls's paper relates to Serapta, a Moravian community that was noted for having the largest mustard plant in the world. Serapta later became part of Volgagrad along the Volga River.

The Rev. Arthur Nehring, president, announced that the society received a $1,000 grant from the Institute of Museum Services Assessment Program in July. A museum consultant chosen by the board will make an on-site assessment of the Whitefield House Museum, collection management policies and general operations. A report will be submitted to the board to serve as a management tool for goals and priorities.
