Archives and Record Management Intern

The Moravian Historical Society, Nazareth, PA, is seeking a summer 2010 Archives and Record Management Intern.

Description:
The Archives and Record Management Internship is designed for interns to gain hands-on experience working with primary source documents. The Moravian Historical Society is home to over 10,000 pieces of uncatalogued archival material relating to Moravian missionary endeavors among the Native Americans, the establishment of Moravian communities, correspondence between Moravians and prominent American leaders and other unidentified pieces. The purposes of this internship project are to inventory, record, photograph, and re-house the archival material in such a manner that the material will be useable for research purposes by members of the Society, researchers, and the public. It is our hope of that upon the completion of this project the archival material will be used by to scholars to gain a better understanding of American History.

Moravian Historical Society internships are designed to give interns experience with several aspects of a museum career including collections care, grant writing, research, public programming, public speaking, and fundraising. Interns are also encouraged, in addition to their specific project, to complete the following tasks:

  • Create one educational program.
  • Visit another historic institution in the area
  • Prepare a presentation to be presented at the Annual Meeting of the Moravian Historical Society
  • Participate in a museum program
  • Research and apply for potential grants
  • Research museum studies doctoral programs
  • Attend a professional development workshop

Moravian Historical Society interns have grown to be leaders in the field of public history as educators, archivists, curators, as well as museum and historical society directors.

Qualifications:
Candidates must be enrolled as a full time student in a graduate or undergraduate program in the field of History, Public History, Archival Science, Museum Studies or other related field. Candidates must also have completed a one semester internship in a museum, archives, or library and be in good academic standing. The intern will be selected according to experience, aptitude, academic background, availability.

Compensation:
The selected intern will receive a $1000 stipend at the end of the summer upon completion of all internship requirements.
